Around 135 experts from all over Germany from the DFG Priority Programmes "International Ocean Discovery Program"(IODP) and "International Continental Scientific Drilling Program" (ICDP) as well as from the IODP expeditions came together at Leibniz University Hannover at the end of August for their annual joint colloquium. In lectures and poster presentations, they reported on their activities and thus provided interesting impulses for discussions.
A look into the depths of the earth: underground research
A highlight, especially for the 600 students from the middle and upper schools of Hanover and the surrounding area, was the geo-show "Underground" with TV presenter Johannes Büchs, which took place in the Audimax as part of the colloquium. With the active participation of the young people, it was mainly about how the varied geological past of our planet can be reconstructed from drill cores and rock samples in a generally understandable and vivid way.
