The German Research Foundation (DFG) is the most important institution for funding researchers. The Senate is its central scientific body: The committee's members decide on all scientific matters and are involved in decisions at all stages of research funding. Georg Guggenberger from the Institute of Soil Science was newly elected for the subject area of agricultural sciences.
Teamwork makes the research work
With this recent nomination, Mr. Guggenberger continues his interdisciplinary commitment: he represented the subject of soil science in the Scientific Committee for Agricultural Sciences, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine for eight years. The election to the Senate is a special honour for Prof. Guggenberger as a representative of his subject. Soil science addresses essential questions such as ensuring food security, keeping groundwater clean and the connection between the global carbon cycle and climate change. Interdisciplinary work is necessary for these studies. According to Mr Guggenberger, these socially highly relevant questions can be dealt with ideally in the interdisciplinary Faculty of Natural Sciences.
